Originally launched as a novel filler for christmas crackers in 1954, they proved to be so poular they went into full production immediately after.

30 different messages were available initially packaged in plain film with no printing. After christmas 1954 a printed wrapper was added and they became an instant success. 

The amount of love hearts produced every year would stretch 32,500 miles or 1.5 times around the world.
